KUCHING: An elderly woman who was reported missing on Monday was found safe in a jungle at Jalan Deshon Timur in Sibu yesterday.

According to a statement by State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), a search and rescue (SAR) team found Lau Hie Ming, in her 70s, about 300 metres where she was reported missing at 9.29am.

Lau left home for a nearby jungle to look for edible vegetables on Monday morning. Her family lodged a police report when she did not return home that afternoon.

Following the report, a search and rescue (SAR) team comprising 10 firemen, four Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team of Malaysia (STORM) and three Multi-Skill Team (MUST) personnel were deployed to the location where Lau was reported missing. The SAR team was also assisted by 10 policemen from the K9 unit.

The search was later called off due to darkness and commenced the next day 8.30am.

The department said Lau was found safe but weak and dehydrated. She was immediately taken to Sibu Hospital for medical attention.
