SAMARAHAN: A Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) student who failed to return to his dormitory since June 14 was found drowned in a lake at the UNIMAS campus.

Kota Samarahan police chief DSP Jaimi Husin said a missing person’s report was made on June 15 by the university dormitory after the deceased did not return to the dormitory and was last seen on June 14.

“Preliminary investigation by the police did not reveal any criminal elements and the death of the 20-year-old university student has been classified as sudden death,” he said.

Jaimi then said that the student’s family also verified the identity, confirming it was the same person who had been reported missing.

The body is found floating on water at the lake in UNIMAS.

He said the body of the deceased has been sent to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for post-mortem.

“On June 15, at 8.34 am, the Kota Samarahan police received an emergency call from MERS 999 pertaining to the incident that a body was found floating at the UNIMAS lake.

“The investigation team then rushed to the scene which led to the discovery of the body at the lake,” he said.

Jaimi said that an on-site investigation found that the man who was in full clothing and believed to be a first year student in UNIMAS.
