KUCHING: Because of the rapid increase in Covid-19 cases in the country, Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Noraini Ahmad has suggested that the registration of new and current students of Higher Educational Institutions (IPTs) be postponed.

In view of the latest development, some IPTs have decided to postpone their traditional face-to-face teaching and learning and commenced with online learning and registration until further notice.

For instance, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) will be holding its student welcoming week as well as the oath-taking ceremony for new students online.

New Sarawak Tribune managed to get comments on these issues from some students.

SHALENE DURIE CHRISTOPHER DANAN: It’s good to postpone the student intake. As for online learning, not everybody is blessed with an environment that is conducive to its application.
GABRIEL LIHAN APAT FERGUSON: The registration of new and current students has been postponed to curb the rise of cases in Covid-19 and to ensure the safety of lecturers and students. Online learning and registration are part of the new norm and something we have to get used to.
The postponement is necessary to avoid a spike in Covid-19 cases among students but universities should take care of those who are already in their campuses. Online learning and registration should be fine as we have experienced them.
MUHAMMAD HAZIM AZMI YEM: The postponement is necessary to avoid a spike in Covid-19 cases among students but universities should take care of those who are already in their campuses. Online learning and registration should be fine as we have experienced them.
TIFFANY VERA CHRISTOPHER DANAN: The postponement of student intake should have been announced earlier. Some students have already bought their flight tickets. Online learning is the safest option currently but it has its own pros and cons because not everyone has the privilege to study conveniently at home due to several reasons. ‘Online registration can be done smoothly only if the system provided by the university is convenient for everyone.’
MUHAMMAD FIRDAUS ABDULLAH: The postponement of student intake can disrupt the study flow. Online learning takes a little bit of time to get used to due to limited contacts with the lecturers, limited internet access, etc. Some students may have difficulties due to family issues in the house, noisy streets or even poor internet lines.
NURIN ALWANI NAZILA AHMAD PATRA: It is not good idea to postpone the student intake because students have to extend their learning time and they will graduate later than planned. Online learning and registration are good. I believe students nowadays are IT- savvy so most of them know how to register online. On top of that, online learning is quite fun and sometimes, it’s easier to learn and understand what we learnt.
