MMEA seizes timber laden tugboat and barge

BINTULU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) here seized a tugboat and a barge laden with logs off Kemena River around 1pm on Tuesday.

According to Bintulu MMEA director Captain Mohd Khairol Anuar Saad, the tugboat and barge were spotted 4.6 nautical miles off the river.

“The tugboat and the barge failed to show any Customs Department documents allowing them to carry the cargo,” he said in a statement.

Also detained were seven Indonesian crew aged 18 to 48 aboard the tugboat, he said, adding their work permits were registered for a different vessel.

Investigations are continuing.
