MIRI: A Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) vessel, KM STAPA, was severely damaged in a fire at Piasau Slipways Sdn. Bhd in Kuala Baram late last night (Oct 31).
The Lutong Fire and Rescue Station chief, Henry Jugah, said that his team was alerted to the incident at 11.35 pm, prompting an immediate response from both the Lutong and Lopeng fire stations.
Upon reaching the site, Jugah said, the KM STAPA vessel was ablaze, with the fire concentrated on the second deck.
Around 40 per cent of the vessel sustained fire damage.
Firefighters utilised the RECEO method — focusing on rescue, exposure, confinement, extinguishment, and overhaul — as they worked to contain the blaze.
Two 400-foot hoses were used to apply both defensive and offensive firefighting tactics, using open water sources to combat the fire until it was fully extinguished.
After ensuring the vessel was secure and the fire completely out, firefighters concluded operations and returned to the station.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire and assessing the extent of the damage.
