MULU: The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s (Bomba Sarawak) Mountain and Cave Search and Rescue (MOCSAR) team continues to demonstrate resilience and determination in serving and protecting the Mulu community.

MOCSAR team leader Kenneth Nilong said the group has made significant progress, especially with the recent addition of new members.

He revealed that Mulu has experienced no major incidents aside from the occasional floods during the rainy season.

“We are still active, keeping up with fitness training and other necessary preparations. Thankfully, we have not had any major incidents, apart from the usual floods,” he told the New Sarawak Tribune.

Touching on the new members, Kenneth said it was important that they selected selecting individuals who are not only physically fit but also familiar with the local terrain is crucial.

He admitted that it was initially challenging to find such members, as many of the pioneering team members are guides, porters, and boatmen.

“We are looking for people who understand the jungle. They need to know how to survive in the forest, navigate rivers, and generally be capable in all types of conditions.

“So far, these 11 recruits have proven to be valuable additions to the team, helping us in our ongoing missions,” he explained.

Presently, the MOCSAR team comprises 21 members, all of whom are locals from the Mulu community.
