The Health Ministry (MoH) has expressed concern over vendors selling drinks in non-food containers such as aquariums.

According to the Food Safety and Quality Division (FSQD) within the MOH, the practice is strictly prohibited under Regulation 31 of the Food Regulations 1985.

In a recent statement, Health director-general Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan highlighted that aquariums are commonly constructed from materials like glass, acrylic, or plastic, which may contain harmful chemicals such as lead or phthalates.

These substances have the potential to contaminate the water and pose serious health risks.

The MOH is urging both sellers and users to prioritise food safety and ensure that all food-related products are safe and of high quality.
