MUKAH: Parents, guardians and local communities are advised to regularly monitor children’s activities especially throughout this monsoon season to prevent any unwanted events.

Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said this is important to prevent incidents such as drowning as the river is flowing very fast during rainy season.

“Moreover, it’s the school holiday season, so the kids at the boarding school will definitely be going home.

“Children will also usually gather when they return to their hometowns and at this time, they will carry out various activities. Therefore, we as adults need to monitor their activities to keep them safe throughout this rainy season.

“We cannot underestimate the power of nature — even if we are champions in swimming, the swift river can certainly cause one to drown.

“Therefore, I advise all residents not to engage in any water activities during the monsoon season,” she pointed out at the Mukah non-governmental organisations strengthening workshop at Hotel Mukah here yesterday.

She also called on the Ketua Kaum and Ketua Masyarakat to report to relevant authorities if the water rises to an alarming level.

At the same time, Fatimah, who is also Dalat assemblywoman, advised schools in Kelit, Dalat and Kuala Kenyana to move their school supplies and equipment to higher ground with the help of villagers.

“For example, dormitory items such as kitchen appliances, furniture and bed as well as office items and others,” she said, adding she will visit Kelit later this month.
