SIBU: This year’s Earth Hour and Love Earth Day themed Climate Action will see a longer list of activities which includes collaboration with various agencies and non-government organisation (NGOs) to create public awareness on preserving the environment.
Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) in a press statement said that various activities will be held beginning this month till March and April.
“We will be organising Earth Ranger, the first campaign to be held in Kampung Bahagia Jaya, Teku, Phase III on Feb 29 to collect garbage.
“This activity is a joint collaboration of the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Sibu, SMC and the Teku Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK),” it said.
SMC said there will also be tree planting campaign and a video creation competition schedule for this month.
“The tree planting campaign is a project organised by the SMC Landscape Section, while JCI Sibu is organising the video-making competition,” it said.
The programme will continue with Park and Ride in conjunction with Carbon Free Day on March 21.
“The charity project provides free bus services for designated routes around the city of Sibu. This is a joint project of i-Cycle, SMC, Lanang Bus Company and Sg Merah Bus Company.
“On the same day, we will also hold a flea market that sells handicrafts and eco-friendly recyclables at a sheltered car park at Tun Tuanku Bujang Square,” it said.
SMC said while the Earth Hour Campaign organised by the SMC in collaboration with the Sibu Lions Club was scheduled for March 28 in the Tun Tuanku Bujang Square.
“The Love Earth Day exhibition and closing ceremony will be held in at Wisma Sanyan lobby on April 18. The project is in collaboration with SMC, Pelita Towerview Sdn Bhd and JCI Sibu,” it said.
It also said SMC will also hold a video presentation and awareness campaign on solid waste management and food compost which is organised by the Enoch Senior Citizens Association.
“This project will be carried out throughout the year to create awareness among schoolchildren in waste management,” it said.
This is the 13th year SMC organised various environmental activities in collaboration with agencies and NGOs since 2008.
