KUCHING: There is a need to have more automated teller machines (ATM) in view of the current and future developments, especially in Lundu.
Tanjong Datu assemblywoman Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu said during the movement control order (MCO) period, many people queued up at banks to withdraw the money given by the government under the stimulus packages.
“As such, I have submitted a proposal to RHB Bank Sarawak to have more ATMs and cash deposit machines (CDMs) in smaller towns in Sematan,” she said in a statement yesterday.
Jamilah revealed that last week, RHB Bank Sarawak had a meeting with the Lundu District Council to consider the proposal.
“The expansion of banking facilities is highly needed due to the continuous development, population growth, increasing economic activities and increasing employment opportunities in the rural areas,” she pointed out.
She added that it was also time for the people to be exposed to online services in their daily lives.
“Mobile services are, however, subjected to the capability of the banks.
“I think in rural and remote areas, the respective banks can appoint bank agents from within the villages like what is being done by Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN),” she said.
Jamilah said the Covid-19 pandemic had opened the eyes of many to the importance of digital technology in every matter.
“This is a blessing in disguise,” she said.
