KUCHING: The opening of both (fast and slow) lanes for the 6th and 7th Mile Flyovers will be further delayed.

This is due to out-of-stock bitumen supply in Kuching since early of June.

The Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak’s Pan Borneo Highway Unit stated that the bitumen supplier in Kuching was having delayed shipment of bitumen supply from Singapore.

“To further complicate the situation, one of the Independent Oil Terminal (IOT) in Sejingkat, Kuching was facing a breakdown last month.

“As such, the available bitumen stocks and supply at that time were very limited due to demands from other package contractors as well,” it explained in a statement today.

It said while waiting for the bitumen supply in Kuching to be replenished, the contractor is trying to get the bitumen supply from Bintulu.

It assured that the contractor is committed to complete and open two fast lanes (both ways) for 7th Mile Flyover by July 17 and then will open all lanes for the flyover by July 25.

“Despite the bitumen shortage problem, the contractor is targeting two fast lanes (both ways) for 6th Mile Flyover on July 15 while the remaining lanes will be opened on the first week of August,” it added.
