SIBU: Infrastructure development for Sarawak’s central zone will continue to be carried out by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) state government.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said what has been implemented by the GPS government included the Rajang Bridge which would connect Sarikei with Tanjung Manis, then to Pualu Bruit across Paloh Bridge, and from Bruit to Daro through the Muara Lassa Bridge.

“Then from Daro, (people) can travel to Mukah, and in Igan the Igan Bridge will also be built. So all over the lower Rajang area, we are connected,” he said when officiating at the PBB Sibu mini convention at Kingwood Hotel, yesterday (Oct 3).

He said that hopefully, all this will be ready by 2024.

“From Igan, we will also build a road to Sibu. Once completed, from Igan to Sibu and Sibu to Kapit, it will take only two hours or less to arrive at Kapit. There is no need to use the express boat,” he said.

Abang Johari added that Kapit would be connected to Nanga Mujong with the construction of the Nanga Mujong Bridge.

“Then from Mujong, it will connect to Baleh, and from Baleh to Belaga — right up to Bintulu,” he said.

He added once all the bridge is complete, it will provide better road connectivity for the people.

“You see, in the lower Rajang, the community is mostly made up of the Malay and Melanau, while in Sibu there is mostly Chinese.

“Then going in the Kapit area, most of our friends are the Iban, and then in Belaga they are the Orang Ulu. This mean that the Rajang area reflects the strong unity of Sarawak,” he said.

Abang Johari said these are among the projects he had delivered in his three years as the chief minister, and in addition with the extra revenue from the state sales tax (SST) received, he would continue to bring more development to Sarawak.
