KUCHING: Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Minister (MYSED) Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah hopes more private sector organisations will support the state government’s efforts to develop sports in Sarawak, particularly football.
Abdul Karim cited the Sarawak Regatta, an annual boat race, as an example, noting that many private organisations frequently provide funding for the event.
“That being said, it would be nice for private organisations to help develop other sports as well.
“Sports such as football is beneficial for the development of the youth here,” he said during a press conference for the upcoming Petronas Youth Football Closed Tournament at Baitul Makmur II building here today.
Additionally, Abdul Karim hopes the Finance Ministry (MoF) will simplify the process for the private sector to fund the state’s sports industry.
“If private companies want to donate or provide funding, there are tax remissions.
“However, these donations are considered assistance, and I believe the MoF should clarify the guidelines to encourage more private sector contributions,” he added.
Among those present at the press conference were MYSED permanent secretary Morshidi Frederick, president of Kuching Division Football Association and co-chairman of Petronas Youth Football Closed Tournament 2024 Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman and general manager of Petronas Sarawak Norazibah M Rabu.
