KUCHING: More individuals have been encouraged to come forward and provide essential food items, particularly for those who require assistance.
Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Women chief Kho Teck Wan said given the current high rising cost of living, providing food items as contributions can alleviate the hardships faced by the needy.
“In the past, with RM100 you could buy many things at the supermarket. But now, the situation has changed, the value of RM100 may no longer be sufficient.
“Hence, I want to convey my appreciation to the National Consumer Action Council (MTPN), Everrise, Harmas Setia Automotif Sdn Bhd, and Food Bank Malaysia for working together to supply food to those who are in need,” she said.
Earlier, Kho was representing Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian to officiate at MTPN Food Bank Malaysia programme which was held in conjunction with Sarawak Day 2023 celebration at the Batu Kawah Waterfront here today (July 15).
Meanwhile, MTPN Sarawak Branch chairman Wynson Ong said the programme has benefited 150 people from the villages in Batu Kawah area.
“This initiative of providing food items will be conducted during the festive seasons in Malaysia.
“And here (Sarawak), we refer to it as the Unity Food Bank because unity holds great significance in our country, particularly in Sarawak, which encompasses diverse races and ethnicities,” he said.
He further said Sarawak is a unique state that has consistently fostered unity and harmony, which must be preserved by all.
“I hope we can collectively shoulder the responsibility of ensuring the sustainability of Sarawak.
“Let us always cherish and safeguard our cultural heritage, take care of our environment, and provide opportunities for every Sarawakian to participate in the development and progress of this state,” he said.
Ong also said MTPN Sarawak remains committed to assisting individuals irrespective of their backgrounds.
Among those present was Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) chairman Tan Kai.
