KUCHING: Asia China Education and Culture (ACEC) Association has donated medical supplies to help Sarawak tackle the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

A total of 1,400 face masks and 1,000 N95 masks were handed to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) while Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (Uitm) received 600 face masks each.

ACEC executive director, Yang Chengcheng, said the contribution was initiated with partners in China that included Anhui Medical University, Soochow University and China Pharmaceutical University.

“Apart from contributing these medical supplies, we (ACEC) also send an invitation letter to Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian to realise our initiatives together.

“Our initiatives include bringing in China’s medical specialists and universities to join those in Sarawak to deal with the Covid-19 crisis. From there on, we can help Sarawak build a more powerful public health service,” he told reporters after handing over the contribution to Unimas in a simple ceremony yesterday.

The event was held at the old State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building in Petrajaya.

He also mentioned that the donation of medical supplies was only a part of ACEC’s current role in assisting the state in the fight against Covid-19.

He further wished to build more research centres and institutes in the future for local medical research as well as invite professional medical practitioners to Sarawak.

“China sent a medical team to Kuching recently to share their expertise in the battle against Covid-19 with the local medical professionals and stakeholders.

“They have gone home but we can do the same programme again from time to time. We can also set up a collaborative centre for the collaboration between China and Sarawak,” he said. Also present was Unimas vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi.
