SIBU: More than 500 members of the Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) Sibu Division attended the 14th STU Sibu Division 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and presentation of souvenirs to retiring STU members at Paramount Hotel here last Saturday.
Speaking at the event, Dudong State Assemblyman and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Chairman, Datuk Tiong Thai King said STU played a very important role in the development of education in the state as well as country.
“I am proud to know that STU is the second largest union in Malaysia with more than 26,000 members from all corners of Sarawak. In Sibu alone, there are more than 3,000 members,” he said.
Tiong was representing Second Minister of Finance, Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh at the launching of STU Sibu Division 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and presentation of souvenirs to retiring STU members.
Besides contributing to nation building, STU,he said, also fought for the welfare and well-being of its members.
“Thus, it is worth recalling why teachers join the union and why the union remains important today,” he added.
Tiong announced an allocation of RM10,000 from Second Minister of Finance, Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh for STU Sibu Division.
He also announced a personal contribution of RM5,000 for the union. At the same function, 40 retiring STU members received souvenirs from the union.
