THE Sarawak Tourism Board’s Visitors Information Centres (VICs) have seen an increase in the number of visitors to the centre every year.
This was revealed by Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting (pic) in reply to a question from Jefferson Jamit Unyat (GPS-Bukit Goram) on the number of visitors to the three VICs in Kuching, Sibu and Miri.
“In 2018, the VIC in Kuching recorded a total of 6,360 visitors while VIC Sibu received 875 visitors and VIC Miri recorded 1,587 visitors,” he added.
Ting explained that the number had increased ever since the three centres moved to more strategic locations.
“As for Jan to Oct this year, the VIC in Kuching recorded a total of 6,791 visitors while VIC Sibu had 949 visitors and VIC Miri recorded 1,544 visitors.”
When asked about the ministry’s or state government’s support for events held in Kapit, Ting revealed that his ministry allocated RM105,000 for ‘Pesta Baleh’ and Kapit Raft Safari, and RM60,000 to organise ‘Pesta Sungai Asap’.
To another question raised by Jefferson on whether the board had any plans to set up an office in Kapit, he explained that STB had no such plans as three centres had been set up in Kuching, Sibu and Miri.
“These VICs have allowed visitors to obtain information on the state’s tourism spots and events held in the respective areas,” he said.
“If there is a need, the board will consider setting up more VICs in the state.”
