SIBU: Eighteen people from three families were made homeless after a morning blaze laid waste to three houses in Kampung Nangka here today.

No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident as they managed to get to safety.

Fire and Rescue Department Zone 4 chief Andy Alie said firemen from Sibu Central, Sungai Merah, and Sibu Jaya stations were promptly deployed to the scene upon receiving a distress call at 10.44 am.

“Upon arrival, a semi-permanent house and two wooden houses were beyond saving, and the extinguishing deed was performed,” he said.

Andy said that the fire resulted in 100 per cent damage to the three houses.

Once the situation is deemed safe, the teams wrapped up the operation at around 1.30 pm.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.
