MUKAH: Five residents were made homeless after a morning blaze consumed two houses in Kampung Belawai today (Aug 1).
Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in the 9.54 am incident.
It is understood that at the time of the incident only one resident was in the first house, while the other was empty as its occupants were at the beach.
A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA) said firefighters from Tanjung Manis station were deployed to the scene, about 25km away, after receiving a distress call.
The Belawai Fire Community was also dispatched to assist in the extinguishing deed.
Upon arrival, the firemen discovered the wooden houses were beyond saving and the extinguishing works were performed using water sourced from a nearby fire hydrant.
The flames were brought under control at 10.45 am, followed by overhaul works to ensure that there was no risk of reignition.
Once the situation was deemed safe, the team ended the operation at 12.30 pm.
The cause of the fire and losses incurred is still under investigation.
