KUCHING: It is most likely that the annual Sarawak Regatta will not be held this year.

State Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said such decision had to be taken after considering the safety of Sarawakians amidst the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

“We will continue to monitor the situation but it is most likely that the regatta cannot be held this year,” he told reporters at a press conference held at Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre in Petra Jaya on Monday (June 15).

Abdul Karim, who is also the Youth and Sports Minister, added although the recovery movement control order (RMCO) was scheduled to end on Aug 31, not all industries would be allowed to open.

“I have a strong feeling that certain industries will resume operations while some others will remain closed.

“That is fine-lah. For this year, we will not hold a lot of the big events but we will come back stronger in 2021.

“I have discussed with the tourism industry players and we came to a consensus to try to hold as many events as possible in 2021 to rebuild all industries related to sports and tourism,” he said.
