KUCHING: A motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries while another is severely injured after their bikes collided at Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Abdul Rahman Yakub, Petra Jaya today (June 4).

Acting Kuching police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said the accident happened around 1.30am when both riders were heading in the same direction towards the Wisma SESCO roundabout.

“The victim, a 19-year-old local, succumbed to internal injuries sustained in the accident while receiving treatment at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

“Meanwhile, the other victim is still receiving treatment for a broken shoulder and broken right leg at SGH,” he said.

Investigations found that the deceased did not have a valid driving licence while the injured victim had an expired driving licence.

Merbin stated that the case is being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death due to reckless or dangerous driving or riding.

Offenders face up to five years in jail and a fine of up to RM20,000 upon conviction.

“The public, especially road users, are strongly advised to be careful while driving and always obey the traffic laws by ensuring that the driver or rider has a valid driving licence and motor vehicle licence.

“Road users are also reminded not to drive or ride dangerously as such an act can cause danger to themselves and other road users,” he said.
