KUCHING: Motor sports can soon be incepted as one of Sarawak’s tourism packages as sports tourism due to its vast talents,  potential and popularity here.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, representing the Minister and Minister of Youth and Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Hannah said this at the launching of the PJM or Petra Jaya Motorspors Club training last month. 

“First and foremost, I would like to congratulate the Petra Jaya Motorsports Club or PJM, for being the first club to become an operator of a training circuit for motorsports in Sarawak.

“The state government has granted approval as JPM is an independent operator where all costs in relation to the upgrading, improvement and maintenance is under their own funding, ” he said. 

Snowdan added that this was a positive move by a motorsports club to make the project a success.

“This is contributed by the experience and expertise of their forming members who are also competitive active racers.

“With such commitment and enthusiasm, we would like to support this project as it is for the development for motorsport in Sarawak, ” he said.

Hence,  he added,  that the activity could also pave a way for motorsports to be recognised as a vast sports tourism potential in Sarawak. 

Similarly, PJM president Darren Sim in his opening address disclosed that the track was formed in September last year and by November 22 the same year was recognised as a legal club. 

He added that project was not to build a race circuit but to set up a training race track for all motorsports enthusiasts to have their training session prior to competing in any races.

Sim also thanked the club’s 120 members for their support in making the project a success.
