KUCHING: Efforts are underway to make available Universiti Malaya’s Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree programme in Sarawak.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Universiti Malaya and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak to facilitate its launch here.
The MoU also signifies a major step forward in collaborative efforts to strengthen higher education and to create better access to educational opportunities in Sarawak.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the initiative underscores the state government commitment to providing comprehensive educational opportunities from primary to tertiary level.
“By ensuring our students have access to a broad spectrum of educational programmes, we are equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in various fields,” he said.
He said this in his speech read by Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah during the MoU signing ceremony and the Premier of Sarawak Debate Championship 2024 award ceremony at Swinburne here on Friday.
The primary area of cooperation under this MoU will be the provision of higher education, with a particular emphasis on legal education and training.
This includes the development of comprehensive legal education programmes that are tailored to meet the needs of students in Sarawak and the wider region.
Through these programmes, students will have the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge and practical skills in the field of law, thereby enhancing their career prospects and contributing to the legal profession.
In addition to legal education, the MoU will focus on creating better access to higher education and training delivered by Universiti Malaya.
This will involve the establishment of new pathways and opportunities for Sarawakian students to engage with Universiti Malaya’s educational offerings.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari congratulated debaters who participated in the competition as their presence showcased their dedication to the art of debate, and commitment to honing their skills in public speaking and critical thinking.
“These skills are not only essential for academic success but also for your future roles as leaders in your communities and beyond,” he added.
In the debate in Bahasa Melayu, Bintulu District Education Office (PPD Bintulu) emerged champion and brought home a trophy and cash prize of RM1500.
Second spot went to PPD Miri which received a trophy as well as cash prize of RM1000.
As for the English debate, SMK Lawas was declared the champion while the runner up was SMK Batu Lintang.
Both won similar prizes as in the BM category.
