LONDON: The Sarawak Museum Department and the British Museum have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for strategic partnership.
The MoU is another milestone for the Sarawak Museum Department in its journey towards becoming a globally recognised institution as it will facilitate joint research initiatives, exhibitions, and cultural exchanges aimed at advancing the field of museology and promoting a deeper understanding of Borneo’s rich history and heritage.
During the signing ceremony which took place on Wednesday (Nov 6), the Sarawak Museum Department was represented by its director Nancy Jolhi while the British Museum by its director Dr Nicholas Cullinan.
Witnessing the signing ceremony were Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Deputy Minister for Tourism Datuk Sebastian Ting and the ministry’s permanent secretary Datuk Sherrina Hussaini.
The MoU which focuses on the study of Borneo and Sarawak artefacts housed in museums across the United Kingdom and at the Sarawak Museum, paves the way for enhanced collaboration between the two institutions.
At the same time, it also showcases the Sarawak Museum Department’s commitment to build international partnerships that highlight the unique history and heritage of Sarawak.
The British Museum, one of the most renowned museum institutions in the world represents a key partner in the Sarawak Museum Department’s vision to expand its
global presence.
The collaboration aligns with the Sarawak Museum Department’s strategic goal of becoming ‘A globally engaged centre of history and heritage by 2030’.
