KUCHING: The Gagasan Bola Sepak Borneo group has the potential to stengthen and develop the football scene further in Borneo region.
Chairman of Kuching City FC Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman said through the group, the cooperation among several football associations in Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei Darrusalam and Kalimatan, Indonesia will be strengthened further.
“From the group itself, I can see that various activities will be held such as the coach exchange programme.
“I can guarantee that this activity will become the main focus for the upcoming group which will develop football in Sarawak and Borneo Island,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after officiating at the Koperasi Koperkasa Sarawak Berhad’s newest building here on today.
Most importantly, he added, the emphasis and purpose must be understood fully to achieve the main obejctive of the group.
Earlier, several football associations in Borneo expressed their desire to establish a football initiative in the region, namely the Gagasan Bola Sepak Borneo.
Football Association of Sarawak (FA Sarawak) on its Facebook post said that, the idea was mooted during the first meeting in Kuching recently which proposed the formation of the group.
The meeting was attended by FA Sarawak, Football Association of Sabah (FA Sabah), Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (FA Brunei), and representatives from football associations from West Kalimantan (KALBAR).
During the meeting, two proposals were decided on by each football association, involving registration and full membership in the proposed idea.
“FA Sarawak will be mandated to act as the interim secretariat for the Borneo football idea for the purpose of registration and preparation of legal documents if the first proposal — which is to accept, support, and become full members in the formation of the idea, is approved,” FA Sarawak said.
