KUCHING: The state government is planning to draft legislation to regulate wireless energy transfer.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the present law must adapt to modern technological advancements to prevent loopholes, particularly with emerging power transfer technologies that do not require cables.
“One such technology is currently being researched by Siemens in collaboration with Swinburne University in Australia. This technology would allow energy to be transferred wirelessly, without the need for cables or wires.
“It operates similarly to Wi-Fi. If this becomes a reality, we will need to draft laws that reflect the current situation. Under existing energy laws, we will need to make amendments to accommodate this new technology.
“Otherwise, energy transfers like these may be considered illegal due to the absence of wires,” he added.
He said this when met by reporters after officiating at the Conference of Speakers of Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies of Malaysia at the DUN building here today.
Abang Johari explained that the jurisdiction of the law will depend on the level of governance.
“If it falls under federal jurisdiction, we will follow federal law.
“As a government, we must propose laws that are relevant to these advancements, including other areas like internet regulations to combat scams. We need to establish legislation to oversee and regulate these emerging industries,” he added.
