KUCHING: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii made an impromptu visit to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) yesterday after being told that construction work has stopped at the SGH multi-level car park.
In a press statement, Dr Yii said construction workers stopped working for a period of time which may cause possible delays in the project and affect not just hospital staff, but also the public.
At the hospital, Dr Yii was briefed on the progress by the project developer and concessionaire Asaljuru Weida Sdn Bhd (AWSB) on the progress of the construction, and he was given a follow-up on issues faced during his last visit.
He confirmed that a concrete slab in the new hospital which failed to meet technical specifications due to the use of substandard concrete has since been demolished and rectified accordingly.
“Currently, a new contractor with a strong track record of building hospitals has been brought in to help accelerate construction work, hence leading to the reported temporary work stoppage.
“Due to this transition, works at the site did come to a halt for about a week, but the new contractors have already restarted construction works.
“They have also given the assurance that they are doing all they can, and are willing to incur additional costs including cost to bring in extra workers and equipment to be mobilised to the project site.
“Even with any kindsof setback or possible delays in the construction of any of the blocks, the developers have taken the responsibility and given assurance that the quality and safety of these upgrades are of paramount importance,” he added.
He also said that he will closely monitor the progress of the project.
