MIRI: Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni is disappointed with the Home Ministry’s decision to discontinue the Sarawak Special Committee on Citizenship and hopes that the ministry can review the decision.

Met after the closing of Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang’s ‘Pesta Tanjong 2019’ here on Saturday, the MP said since the establishment of the committee in 2016, it had helped a lot of people from the state to obtain their citizenships.

“Children with no proper documentations were able to pursue their education and living normal lives which proved that the Sarawak Special Committee on Citizenship had played its role well in helping the affected people to get their rights as citizens of the country,” he said, adding that if the present method is discontinued, the federal government (under Pakatan Harapan) should set up a new mechanism as an alternative.

He also said that the Home Ministry should provide reasons for its decision.

“Adopt government-to-government approach to better improve relationship between the federal and state government (Sarawak), so that we can tackle critical issues concerning the people’s well-being,” he explained.

He also pointed out that the discontinuation (of the committee) by the federal government showed as though there were no discussions between the federal and state governments.
