SIBURAN: The exchanging of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders for Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) cylinders should not be politicised.
Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin said this is crucial to prevent it from becoming a community problem.
He said it is therefore important for all parties to provide clear explanations regarding the exchange of LPG cylinders.
“We don’t want the exchange of Petros LPG cylinders to become a political issue because there are a few parties taking advantage of this matter,” he said.
Willie said this at the ‘Jak Ta Nukar Tong Gas’ or Let’s Change Gas Cylinder programme at the Siburan Community Hall here Saturday (Feb 3).
The State Legislative Assembly (DUN) had during its Nov 21 sitting last year passed the Gas Distribution (Amendment) Bill.
Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi then announced that PetrosNiaga Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Petros, will be the sole distributor of LPG in the state, effective Dec 1 last year.
In this regard, Wille asserted that the programme aims to demonstrate to the public that the process of exchanging LPG cylinder barrels is very easy and problem-free.
“People are also advised not to panic because the exchange process is continuous. The claim that there is no distribution after this is not true.
“So, all community leaders and our grassroots leadership are expected to help explain the matter to the community in their respective areas,” he said.
He said the fixed price for each subsidised 14-kilogram (kg) LPG cylinder refill is RM26.60 (self-collection).
However, there might be a difference in the price in the interior, especially due to additional charges related to transportation and delivery factors.
“That’s why this kind of programme is important for us to explain in more detail about the matter to the community.
“It is crucial that they do not blame the representatives of the people in their respective areas; they should also not blame the Sarawak government and Petros,” he added.
