KUCHING: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen has lodged a police report recently regarding a suspected cheating and dishonesty case.

Dr Yii said, accompanied by his lawyer, he had lodged the report to give a statement on a case where an individual name-dropped his name claiming he would pay for an event that was organised by the individual in a hotel here.

“This individual contacted my secretary some time last year and requested funds from my office for him to organise a “Singing Competition” in one of the hotels here.

“My secretary than explained the procedures for application of grants and that we can only allocate to a non-governmental organisation (NGO) registered within our constituency (procedures set by government), and was unable to allocate to any business or money making entity.

“After multiple explanations, the individual then still invited myself to attend the event to show support even though I did not allocate any funds. Unfortunately/fortunately I was unable to attend it due to work commitments and only sent a representative to go.

“Long story short, after the event, he did not pay the hotel for cost of event and when demanded, he used my name and claimed that I promised and committed to pay for the event,” he said in a statement posted on his Facebook.

Hence, Dr Yii lodged a police report with his statement and furnishing all evidence, including screenshot of all WhatsApp conversations and documents to prove that no payment was promised on his behalf.

“When it comes to handling of public funds, I am very particular and will follow all necessary procedures not only because I am audited, but more importantly it is because I am handling public funds which have been entrusted to me.

“So I am very ‘pantang’ when it comes to usage of public funds and will expect the utmost form of accountability and transparency of myself and office (I publish my yearly expenditures publicly),” he added.

Dr Yii then conveyed his thanks to Royal Malaysia Police Department (PDRM) and also the assigned Investigative Officer (IO) who worked hard on the case.

“I was informed this is not first time this happened with this particular individual. Hope all investigation can be carried out smoothly and justice be served,” said Dr Yii.
