MIRI: Member of Parliament, Chiew Choon Man voiced his deep concern over the findings of the latest World Bank report titled “Bending Bamboo Shoot: Strengthening Foundation Skills”.

The report revealed that a staggering 42 percent of Malaysian students failed to achieve proficiency in reading by the end of Standard 5.

Of particular concern to Chiew was the stark disparity among economically disadvantaged children, with an alarming 61 percent falling below the proficient levels in reading.

“This shocking trend signals a pressing need for urgent intervention to address the root causes of educational disparities and ensure equal opportunities for all children,” he said after officiating SK St Columba’s 16th Parent-Teacher-Association (PTA) meeting today.

In response to the report, Chiew has announced plans to bring the issue to Parliament for further discussion and action.

Additionally, he has initiated discussions with primary schools in Miri to organize programmes aimed at improving literacy skills among students, especially those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to address educational challenges.
