KUCHING: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen has taken a decisive action to address the recent surge in bomb threats targeting schools nationwide.

This morning, he submitted an emergency motion under Standing Order 18(1) to the Parliament Speaker, seeking approval for an urgent debate on the critical issue.

“As of 2 pm yesterday (Nov 22), the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) reported an alarming total of 37 police reports related to bomb threats in schools across the country.

“These incidents involved 28 international schools, seven private schools, and two public schools.

“Despite thorough security sweeps conducted by the police at the affected schools, no evidence of explosives was detected.

“However, the gravity of the situation cannot be underestimated, as it not only jeopardises the safety and security of students, teachers, and staff but also poses a significant threat to national security,” he said in a statement.

Dr Yii stressed the need for immediate and comprehensive action by the PDRM and relevant authorities to investigate and trace the source of these threats.

He said those responsible must be held accountable under the full weight of the law for endangering the safety of children.

Through the emergency motion, the Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (DAPSY) chief called on the Ministry of Education (MoE) to provide insights into their existing procedures and standard operating procedures (SOPs) in handling such threats.

“I urge the ministry to tighten and improve these SOPs if necessary, ensuring they are adaptable to the current situation.

“On top of that, it is also important for the PDRM and relevant authorities to do all necessary investigations and allay the concerns of the students and parents of their safety and security in schools.

“We do not want to create any unnecessary panic and disrupt our children’s education in the process,” he said.
