SIBU: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Dudong branch chairman Wong Ching Yong has questioned Lanang MP Alice Lau on the pledges made in her election manifesto.

According to Wong, in the last election Lau stated in her manifesto that she would implement the four major projects here, namely Sibu Heart Centre, Cancer Centre, new SMK Dudong and upgrading of Sibu Airport Road during her term as soon as she was elected but it is seen otherwise.

“Alice Lau has been re-elected and I fully respect the democratic rights of the people of Lanang. But the people of Lanang have the democratic right to evaluate the performance of their MP,” he said.

He pointed out that Sibu, with a population of about 850,000, is the most suitable for the construction of a second heart centre in Sarawak.

“Heart disease is the number one killer of Malaysians. Data shows that 141 out of every 100,000 people in the country suffer from coronary heart disease, which shows the great demand of the people for heart disease treatment.

“Sarawak is no exception, but for many years, there was only one heart centre in Sarawak and patients including those in the central region had to travel long distances for medical treatment,” he said.

He added that if Sibu has a heart centre it will benefit the residents of the central region of Sarawak, namely Sarikei, Bintangor, Mukah, Dalat, Kapit and Bintulu.

“Currently, heart patients in this area can only go to the Samarahan Heart Centre and private medical centres in Kuching for treatment.

“On top of this, patients have to bear huge costs such as flight tickets and there is also the problem of insufficient flights,” he added.
