MIRI: Miri MP Chiew Choon Man has taken exception to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s recent jibe about the prevalence of Chinese-language signboards in Kuala Lumpur shopping complexes.
He dismissed Dr Mahathir’s depiction of Malaysia “becoming part of China” as an attempt to alienate Malaysians from one another.
Such rhetoric undermines the country’s multicultural fabric and misrepresents the reality of its diverse society, he said, refuting Dr Mahathir’s assertion that the prominence of Chinese signage reflected an erosion of Malaysian identity.
“Malaysia is a vibrant nation built upon a rich tapestry of cultures and languages,” said Chiew.
“The presence of Chinese language signboards reflects our multicultural society, where various ethnic groups coexist and contribute significantly to the nation’s economy and cultural landscape.”
Chiew pointed to the crucial role of Chinese businesses in Malaysia’s economy, noting that their success and visibility, symbolised by such signage, strengthen the nation’s identity.
“The use of multiple languages in public spaces is a hallmark of a globalised society. Just as English is prevalent in many countries, we should embrace and celebrate the multilingual nature of our communities as a strength,” he added.
Chiew warned against rhetoric that sows division and fuels unfounded fears.
“Our nation’s strength lies in its diversity. By celebrating our varied backgrounds, we can build a more cohesive society,” he said.
“It is time to focus on the shared values that unite us as Malaysians, cultivating a future where every culture is respected and celebrated.”
Chiew, in this instance, called on all Malaysians to reject polarising narratives and work together to foster understanding and harmony.
