JULAU: Julau MP Datuk Larry Sng lodged a police report after gangsters allegedly planned to attack him.
Sng, who had been distributing angpows as part of Chinese New Year celebrations, found himself embroiled in a tense confrontation with the gangsters, culminating in threats of violence and a reported plan to harm him.
Concerned for his safety and that of others, he wasted no time in filing a police report to ensure appropriate measures were taken to address the situation.
The encounter, which occurred on Feb 11, initially began innocuously as Sng made rounds visiting the Chinese community here.
However, what started as a customary gesture of distributing RM5 angpows to children soon took a darker turn when gangsters at an open house requested angpows from Sng.
Despite the intended recipients being children, Sng acquiesced to the request of the gangsters.
As the day progressed, tensions escalated when the gangsters expressed dissatisfaction with the angpow amount, leading to confrontations and demands for larger sums of money.
“At 5 pm as I was leaving the Pakan district officer’s house, four gangsters, including their heads, surrounded me and said the amount was too small and expressed their displeasure. I agreed and told them that next year I would prepare more.
“They then asked for RM500, which I agreed to bank to someone they knew.
“As I entered the car, they refused to disperse, and they started arguing with my supporters, to the point of pushing Tuai Rumah Empi to the ground,” he said in a Facebook post.
Sng added that it was later revealed that the gang’s leader had purportedly informed someone in Sng’s entourage of their intention to attack him, allegedly having prepared weapons in their car.
Fearing for his safety and the safety of those around him, Sng promptly sought refuge by lodging a police report, highlighting the seriousness of the threats posed by the gangsters.
Yesterday, Julau police chief DSP Andam Sulin said they were aware of gangsterism activities in Julau and Pakan that was brought up by Sng.
“We have detained four suspects for investigation under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation,” he said.
