KUCHING: Media practitioners in Sarawak have been urged to participate in the national level Malaysian Journalism Awards.
Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) chairman Datuk Chamil Wariya said participation by Sarawakian media practitioners is still very low.
“For the past two years, there was no participation from Sarawakian media practitioners. We would like to see more Sarawakian media practitioners participating because there are various categories they could go for.
“There are attractive cash prizes to be won where the winner will bring home RM10,000, for second place RM4,000 and third place RM3,000,” he said.
He made these remarks during a courtesy visit to New Sarawak Tribune and Suara Sarawak chief executive officer Datuk Dr Jeniri Amir on Wednesday (Aug 16).
Chamil pointed out that the Malaysian journalism award has become inclusive as it is not limited for print news submissions only.
He said there are four categories specifically for print news whereas the other eight categories are open for print, online and broadcasting.
“In fact, some of the categories such as photo essay and infographics are low hanging fruits which participants can participate in.
“These categories are less competitive in comparison to the higher categories such as investigative journalism which is a different ball game,” he said.
The Malaysian Journalism Awards is held annually with the prize money sponsored by organisations like Petronas often standing at RM300,000 a year.
