KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai outlined a promising vision for the future during the flag-hoisting ceremony held in conjunction with the council’s 28th anniversary today.
He announced several upcoming projects aimed at enhancing the municipality’s infrastructure and services, including the New Padawan Municipal Council Office Complex and the New Green Market at Matang Jaya, both in the detailed design stage.
Additionally, an urban recreational park at Jalan Batu Kawa is in the preliminary design stage to offer new recreational opportunities for residents.
“Our vision remains steadfast, an efficient and sustainable Padawan municipality. Guided by this vision, our mission is to enhance the quality of life for our people by providing efficient municipal services through community participation,” said Tan Kai.
He also highlighted several completed projects, such as the Ang Cheng Ho Multipurpose Hall and the Batu Kawah Riverbank Park, completed in phases and offers various recreational facilities.
Other notable projects include the New Hawker Centre at Kota Sentosa and the Recreational Park at Kota Padawan.
Reflecting on the council’s history, he noted that MPP, originally known as the Kuching Rural District Council (KRDC), was established in 1956, began operations in 1957, and was elevated to a Municipal Council on Aug 1, 1996.
This year, MPP marks 68 years as a Local Authority and 28 years as a municipal council, overseeing an area of 984.34 sq km with a population of 260,058.
He emphasised the council’s commitment to transparency and community engagement, noting MPP’s workforce of 434 staff members across eight divisions and 32 councillors serving through a ward zoning system.
MPP has also recently received the RISIKO RENDAH 2023 award by SPRM and the 5 Star Award for Local Authority 2024 — Star Rating, underscoring its commitment to excellence and integrity.
Tan Kai also highlighted the Green City Action Plan, supported by the Ministry of Economy Malaysia, the Asian Development Bank, and ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, which emphasises MPP’s dedication to sustainable development.
“As we celebrate this 28th anniversary, let us reflect on our journey and reaffirm our commitment to serving the community with dedication and integrity.
“Together, we will continue to build a better, more sustainable Padawan Municipality for future generations,” he said.
