KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has been chosen as the pioneering local council for the Green City Action Plan (GCAP) project under the 12th Malaysian Plan (12MP).
Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said the implementation is in line with the vision of a prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable Malaysia.
“It will identify constraints, gaps, and opportunities for resilient, sustainable and low-carbon development in urban areas, assisting cities and towns in anticipating and responding to complex challenges such as rapid urbanisation and climate change.
“Climate change and global warming is a world-wide phenomenon which is real and also happening here in Sarawak.
“The evident effects of climate change, include rising temperatures and extreme weather events, have also impacted Kuching City and MPP,” he said at the MPP 27th commemoration day and appreciation dinner held at a hotel here last night (Aug 29).
His text of speech was read out by Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang.
In Sarawak’s effort to move towards a greener future, Dr Sim said that it is important for MPP to align its planning strategies with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).
He said the state government is steadfastly implementing various measures to stimulate the economy, enhance productivity and strengthen its competitiveness in the global market.
“We recognise the significance of this endeavour in advancing our new economic initiatives, particularly within the realm of green economy and in generating high-paying jobs that ultimately enhance the well-being of our people.
“This strategy, however, is not only about economic growth, it is also about inclusivity and sustainability, ensuring that no one is left behind,” he said.
Dr Sim said that he is confident that, under the leadership chairman Tan Kai, MPP will work closely with other government departments, agencies and the appointed consultants to achieve the GCAP.
“This strategic collaboration will not only aim to decarbonise our beloved Kuching City but also open doors to new markets, investment opportunities and the creation of green jobs.
“This endeavour will ultimately lead to a more liveable MPP, benefiting not just the council itself but the entire communities in Padawan and Kuching City,” he said.
