KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian junior squash players won two titles in the 2019 British Junior Open Squash Championships which concluded in Birmingham, England on Sunday (early Monday in Malaysia).
Ameeshenraj Chandaran, in fifth-eighth seed category, pulled off the biggest upset by defeating the top seed, Denis Gilevskiy of Ireland, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5 and 11-7 in the Boys’ Under 15 (U-15) category, according to the tournament’s website;www.britishjunioropen.com.
Another Malaysian player, Nickhileswar Moganasundharam, the top seed in the Boys’ U-11 category, lived up to the billing by edging the second seed, Chris Baddour of Egypt; winning 9-11, 11-7, 11-4 and 11-6.
It was contrasting fate for the defending champion in the Girls’ U-15 category, Aira Azman who failed to retain the title, losing 8-11, 11-9 11-7, 13-15 and 7-11 to the second seed, Salma El Tayeb of Egypt.
The joint fifth seed in the Boys’ U-13 category, Harith Danial Jefri also faced the same fate after going down to another Egyptian player, second seeded Abdallah Eissa;losing 7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 7-11 and 12-14.
Another Malaysian player, Whitney Wilson, the top seed in the Girls’ U-11 category, suffered an unexpected 11-13, 9-11, 11-7 and 9-11 defeat to the joint third-fourth seed, Anahat Singh of India. – Bernama
