MIRI: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Senadin branch secretary Jeffrey Phang has lauded the idea of a Borneo Railway System.

At the Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak programme in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the federal government had agreed in principle to the the idea.

“Developing a railway infrastructure in a vast area like Sarawak will be a significant undertaking but it will definitely bring to bear a lot of benefits in developing the state in many years to come,” said Phang.

“Railways can boost economic activity by facilitating the movement of goods and people, leading to increased trade and tourism.

“Rail networks can enhance accessibility to remote regions, connecting people to education, healthcare, and job opportunities apart from reducing congestion in populated areas.”

According to Phang a railway system will also translate to a sustainable transport as railways are generally more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly than other modes of transport.

Besides, he added, developing railways across vast areas can stimulate regional growth, promoting balanced development.

“In addition, Indonesia is establishing the country’s new capital at Nusantara, if we can capitalise on this and a build good connectivity, for example, connectivity between Miri City to Nusantara, we can also invest in developing a deep sea port at the northern region, complimenting the economy of the two countries,” Phang said.
