KUCHING: The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) Sarawak has urged police to thoroughly investigate the sudden death of a 22-year-old university student on Oct 16.

Its chairman Jeffery Ngui said this in a statement in response to mounting uncertainties and concerns surrounding the woman’s death in the Petanak area.

He emphasised the need for an in-depth police investigation, particularly given the involvement of a university student, drug abuse and an entertainment outlet in the case.

During the same month, a narcotics operation codenamed ‘Ops Tapis Khas’ led to the successful seizure of 42.2kg of drugs and the arrests of five suspects, aged between 17 and 22.

“These arrests show that drug activities are poisoning the youth in Sarawak.

“Drug syndicates need to be rooted out and entertainment outlets used for drug sales and distribution must be promptly identified and shut down.

“Hence, I call upon Bukit Aman and Sarawak police to meticulously review and refine the circumstances of the female student’s sudden death to facilitate further investigations and provide the truth to the deceased’s family,” he said.

Last Sunday (Oct 22), Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen also called for a comprehensive investigation by Kuching police into the sudden death case.

The Stampin MP and Padungan assemblyman noted that conflicting reports had emerged, with initial information from a Chinese daily indicating that the woman died in an entertainment outlet.

However, a police statement released on Oct 18 contradicted this, revealing that her body was found by the roadside near an entertainment outlet.

“Furthermore, the preliminary investigation found no evidence of foul play and the case was classified as a sudden death.

“According to the deceased’s family, a urine test revealed the presence of three types of drugs, including methamphetamine and MDMA,” Chong said.
