MUKAH: This district may have a synthetic football field in future.
The people’s dream especially among local football enthusiasts of having an artificial pitch was raised during an official event here a few years ago.
Newly-elected Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine said he would bring the matter to the relevant authority soon.
The youth activist added it was raised during a Town Hall programme with the chief minister here a few years ago.
“I will propose and raise it again during the coming State Legislative Assembly meeting,” he said at an appreciation dinner at a restaurant here on Tuesday (Jan 4).
The dinner was in appreciation of Mukah Football Association Under-25 team which competed in the Sarawak Sports Council (SSC)/Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) League last year.
He hoped that with better football facilities, it would help in improving the quality of the game here, where Mukah used to produce some players who had represented Sarawak before.
Royston, who is also Mukah football team manager, also hoped that the current squad would improve after its unsatisfactory outing in the last tournament.
According to him, the current squad, whose age ranged from 18 to 23 years, may be retained for future competition with a few additional players.
He revealed that the SSC/FAS U-25 League may be organised annually and divided into a few categories such as Under-19 and so on.
He added this was announced at a prize-presentation ceremony in Bintulu recently, where the minister in-charge of sports and FAS president had indicated their intention to introduce additional categories in the competition.
At the event, Royston, who is also FAS vice-president, handed over certificates and small token to the players who were involved in the last Under-25 tournament.
Mukah Division Football Association (MuFA) deputy chairman Mohamad Samuri, assistant manager Zainal Laily, head coach Jamal Wasli and former Sarawak goalkeeper Aidil Mohammad, who was also goalkeeping coach also attended the event.
