MUKAH: After proposing that a swimming pool would be built in this town during the 2013 election campaign, local folk are wondering if the project will ever materialise.
The town has been ‘denied’ the much needed facility for a long time while Kapit and Limbang have gotten theirs for years.
Students who have the potential are also ‘denied’ the opportunity to prove themselves as there is no place to practise and participate in local competition.
Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan when asked about the proposal during his official visit here on Feb 23 this year had given a positive reply and said that the government would look into the matter.
However, he said he was unsure whether the proposal was made through the federal or state governments (under former Ministry of Social Development and Urbanisation).
“What had been announced may not be in black and white,” he added during a press conference which was attended by current Mukah Member of Parliament (MP) Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib.
Tellian assemblyman Yussibnosh Balo who was also present said he had seen the proposal, but did not elaborate. Hanifah on the other hand, kept silent about the matter.
Former Mukah MP Tan Sri Dr Muhammad Leo Michael Toyad during his election campaign here in May 2013 proposed that an Olympic-sized swimming pool would be built here in the future.
Currently, some members of the public who want to go swimming have to go to a privately-owned pool located 15km from town.
Users are charged a certain fee for using the facility which is owned by a local resort (beach hotel).
