Mum held after body of newborn found

KUCHING: The body of a newborn infant allegedly thrown down from the 13th floor of a hotel was found on the road behind a bank in Jalan Bukit Mata on Wednesday evening (Jan 13).

Kuching district police chief ACP Awang Din Awang Gani said a report was received at 9.20pm when the body was found by members of the public.

He said police investigation at the location had led to the arrest of a 19-year-old local woman believed to be the mother of the baby.

“Investigations found the baby’s body at the scene with head injuries.

“Upon further investigation, the police detained a 19-year-old local woman suspected to be the mother of the baby in a room at a nearby hotel,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Jan 14).

The body was sent to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for further action while the suspect was sent to SGH for treatment.

The case is being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code and is still under investigation.
