KUCHING: Datuk Mutang Tagal has an ideal background to serve as Senate President, said Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice-president Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He said given Mutang’s legal expertise, he is well-equipped to lead the Senate effectively.

“Although Mutang has been away from active politics for a long period, having last served as a parliamentarian in the 1980s to 1990s, he has got the kind of background that fits him to be the Senate President,” he said.

Abdul Karim, who is the Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, Performing Arts (MTCP), said Mutang’s appointment holds significance for the Dayak community.

“Mutang is the first Dayak to be made President of the Senate. It is an honour to the Dayak community especially to the Lun Bawang or Orang Ulu community,” he said.

Mutang, 69, the former Bukit Mas MP was elected as the 20th President of the Senate on Feb 19.
