KUCHING: 400 households from across Sarawak will receive donations in the form of essential food items under the annual MyRamadan programme.
This 11th instalment of the programme this year was organised by Halaqah Kemajuan Muslim Sarawak (HIKAM) alongside Sarawak Energy, Sarawak Volunteers and Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).
These 400 households are from 13 districts from around Sarawak namely Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, Miri, Debak, Pusa and Sebauh.
The aim of the programme is to lessen the burden of aid recipients, which includes the needy group, single mothers, the poor, and orphans.
According to MyRamadan 2023 programme director Syahazlan Sahmat, most of the volunteers this year were from UNIMAS, as it was a deliberate choice to work with the university’s faculty.
“We recognise that charitable programmes are not uncommon, but our objective with this programme is to provide aid to the communities in need while also instilling positive character traits in young people that will benefit them in the future.
“The programme will run starting today (yesterday) until April 16, and we are optimistic to distribute up to 1,000 packages of food aids with the assistance of funding from other organisations,” he told reporters after the launching of the programme at the Darul Hana Mosque yesterday.
He added some 120 volunteers were involved in the distribution of aid, with approximately 70 from UNIMAS and 50 from the public for yesterday’s programme.
Earlier, 167 food packages were distributed to Kuching, Kota Samarahan and Serian.
Also present at the programme were representatives from Sarawak Energy, Sarawak Volunteers and UNIMAS.
