SIMUNJAN: An unusual occurrence at Kampung Kelka here has left both locals and authorities perplexed.
A fire, approximately half a metre high, continues to blaze from a hole in the ground, raising concerns about safety and potential hazards.
Discovered last Dec 29, the fire persists despite efforts to extinguish it, leaving the community and officials searching for answers.
A survey conducted by Suara Sarawak on the 11th day (Jan 5) of the incident revealed that not only is the fire still burning, but the surrounding area is now filled with mud believed to have overflowed from the mysterious hole.
Residents, fearing potential dangers, had covered the hole with large rocks, yet the flames show no signs of abating.
The location of the phenomenon, situated next to a stone road used as a shortcut to Simunjan’s main market, poses potential risks for Kelka residents.
Despite covering the hole and installing precautions such as barriers, the Simunjan Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) team remains vigilant in case of any unforeseen incidents.
Simunjan Bomba chief Nazari Harun explained that initial efforts to extinguish the fire were undertaken promptly after its discovery.
“Despite successfully putting out the flames that night, the fire rekindled the next morning,” prompting questions about the presence of dangerous gases underground.
The contents triggering the flame phenomenon remain unknown, highlighting the need for continued safety measures.
Nazari urged caution for residents using the route near the incident site and noted ongoing efforts, including the installation of barriers and regular monitoring by authorities.
Law enforcement authorities were alerted to the incident after residents attempting to extinguish the fire with water faced unsuccessful outcomes.
