KUCHING: The issue of who the next prime minister is still not known.

When met by journalists, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the final decision is in the hands of the King.

“We will see (what the final decision will be). Even I, myself do not know what the King has decided,” he said when met by the media after the second day of the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting today (Nov 22).

For the record, GPS has announced that it has submitted a proposal to establish the government of Malaysia from a coalition consisting of Perikatan Nasional, Barisan Nasional, GPS and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah.

However, BN leaders have indicated that the party is ready to be in the opposition and would not be part of either a Pakatan Harapan or Perikatan Nasional-led government.

Given the political turmoil in Peninsular Malaysia, GPS decided to leave it to the discretion of the King in accordance with the powers allocated to His Majesty in the Federal Constitution to appoint a prime minister who will lead a strong government to govern the country.

Nevertheless, the party insists that the interests of the country are prioritised and the establishment of a stable government takes into account the interests of the people and the country above any of the political parties’ personal interests.

The King is expected to announce the new prime minister anytime now before 5.30 pm, according to sources.
