KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) MPs have no problem declaring their assets as directed by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, says Batang Sadong MP Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

She pointed out that the directive was not new as GPS’ federal and state lawmakers had previously declared their assets to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) when the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem was the Chief Minister.

“I declared mine when I was a minister before,” she revealed in response to Puncak Borneo MP Willie Mongin’s call to GPS MPs to join the federal lawmakers in declaring their assets.

Adding that all income taxpayers were also required to declare their assets, Nancy said she welcomed the long overdue move by Tun Mahathir to ensure transparency and accountability.

“We, as Muslims, must pay attention and be aware of the properties and assets we own. In fact, the third pillar of Islam requires us to pay zakat based on the total amount of properties, including savings and jewellery,” she told New Sarawak Tribune when contacted yesterday.

Nancy added she believed all GPS MPs would submit their lists of assets to the MACC soon.

“There is no such thing as giving excuses. Once we are called to do so, we will proceed to declare our assets.

“It is just a matter of time,” she said.
