SARIKEI: Over 2,000 residents in the interior of Julau, particularly Ulu Mujok, can now heave a sigh of relief as the construction of the Nanga Meluan Bridge has been successfully completed.
This bridge, spanning the Kanowit River, not only improves communication for the residents but also brings social and economic benefits to the local community.
Expressing his delight, Meluan assemblyman Rolland Duat Jubin referred to the bridge as the lifeline that connects residents who previously relied solely on river transportation.
“Previously, they had to undertake long journeys, but with the completion of the Nanga Meluan Bridge, residents can now travel via roads, significantly reducing travel distances,” he shared with the media on today (July 5).
He commended the efficiency of the implementing agencies, including the Public Works Department (JKR) and contractors, for their dedicated efforts in completing the project.
“Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, they successfully overcame various obstacles such as difficult geographical conditions and unpredictable weather.
“With the project now fully completed, I am confident that it will greatly benefit the residents of this area, including the clinic and school.
“Moreover, this area also boasts other attractions such as Brooke’s Fort and the waterfall, indirectly attracting visitors and opening up economic opportunities for the local community.”
Meanwhile, Julau District Pemanca, Robert Datu highlighted that the bridge would catalyse economic growth and create wider opportunities for residents who previously relied solely on river transportation.
He stated that the bridge construction was a testament to the government’s commitment to the development and progress of Julau, aligning it with other districts.
“This project is like a dream come true. We never imagined that today we would have the opportunity to enjoy such facilities.
“On behalf of the residents, I would like to thank Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for approving the allocation for the construction.”
